Status: 100% Completed
Overview:
This flagship project, managed by Pembinaan Kiawayan Sdn. Bhd. in close partnership with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), introduced an innovative, portable treated water gravity system to the rural community of Kg. Rungus Nahaba, Tuaran. Designed to serve 30 households, the system delivers clean, drinkable water directly to homes using natural gravity flow and membrane filtration — without any need for electricity.
The project was funded through the Malaysia Social Innovation (MSI) grant under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), and represents a model of sustainable, community-empowering infrastructure.
Key Objectives:
To deploy a green technology water supply solution requiring no external power source.
To empower the local community through the creation of a village-led management system for long-term operation and sustainability.
To showcase how science, technology, and innovation can directly solve socio-economic challenges in rural Sabah.
Key Features:
Membrane Filtration Technology: Clean water is achieved through membrane-based filtering integrated into the gravity flow system, allowing villagers to consume water directly from taps.
Underground Gravity System: Utilizes elevation and natural pressure — with zero reliance on electrical or fuel-powered pumps.
Community Empowerment: UMS facilitated the formation of a village management committee to oversee and maintain the system, enhancing local ownership and ensuring long-term viability.
Portable and Scalable: Designed to be adaptable for other remote areas in Sabah.
Impact:
Clean and treated water access provided to 30 households in Kg. Rungus Nahaba.
Reduced reliance on water collection and improved household hygiene.
Empowered villagers through skill-building and self-governance of a user-friendly, sustainable system.
Strengthened cross-sector collaboration between academia, industry, and government.
Milestones and Recognition: The project was officially launched during a Knowledge Transfer Programme event attended by key stakeholders, including:
Datuk Jahid Jahim, Sabah Rural Development Minister
Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment
UMS representatives including Prof Madya Dr Ramzah Dambul (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) and Dr Gaim James Lunkapis (Project Head)
This initiative also aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan and the 12th Malaysia Plan, highlighting innovation as a driver of rural transformation.
Legacy:
As the first gravity-fed water project managed by Pembinaan Kiawayan Sdn. Bhd., Kg. Rungus Nahaba now serves as a blueprint for future rural development initiatives. It reflects our company’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure, meaningful partnerships, and community-centered solutions.

The Sabah State Government has allocated approximately RM500,000 to develop a green technology clean water treatment plant at Quoin Hill Agricultural Research Centre in Tawau.
The facility now provides safe and free clean water to about 300 households, including staff and their families, who previously relied on pond water and rainwater. This development significantly reduces their cost of purchasing drinking water.
According to Sabah Agriculture Department Director, Jifrin Haji Mohamad, this project marks the department’s first implementation of such technology and will serve as a model for future installations in other locations.
The system, developed by Pembinaan Kiawayan Sdn Bhd, uses a gravity-based method that does not require electricity, making it highly efficient and suitable for rural and remote areas. The treated water has undergone testing and is safe for consumption.
This initiative highlights the potential of sustainable, low-cost solutions to improve water access, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure.

A local native from Tambunan, Joe Primus Kayau, has developed a green energy gravity water filtration system capable of producing up to 200,000 litres of clean water daily.
The system, built at a cost under RM500,000, benefits over 40 households in Kampung Sintuong-Tuong and is part of the Clean Gravity Water Community Project, which is expanding to other remote villages in Sabah.
The technology requires no electricity, uses a three-stage filtration process, and allows villagers to operate it easily. It provides continuous access to safe water while reducing reliance on natural water sources.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan highlighted the system’s potential to improve the lives of thousands in rural communities and praised the innovation by a local Sabahan supported by Universiti Malaysia Sabah experts.
So far, six villages have benefited, with three more projects expected to be completed this year. Villages served include Kampung Koliposuan, Kampung Bukit Mengidam, Kampung Tukalilan, Kampung Langsat, Kampung Tudan, and Kampung Sintuong-Tuong.

Gravity water supply for 300 Ranau residents

Abidin took the time to inspect the Green Technology Clean Gravity Water System used in the project.
Hundreds of residents in Kg Kepangian, Ranau, now enjoy access to clean and sustainable water through a green technology gravity water system. The project benefits over 300 residents and is capable of supplying up to 15,000 litres of clean water daily.
The system is highly innovative, requires minimal maintenance, and reduces reliance on conventional water supply methods. It also helps ease the burden of ongoing maintenance costs, allowing resources to be redirected to other community developments.
The project was implemented through collaboration between the Ranau District Office, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and consultant Ir. Joe Primus Kayau, whose patented technology enables efficient water treatment.
This initiative marks the first project of its kind in Ranau, with hopes for further expansion to other rural areas to improve access to clean water.
